Top Questions about the High School Placement Test
Entrance Exam

What is the cost of taking the test?
The cost of the test is included in the application fee. If your daughter is applying to more than one Catholic high school, they must pay the application fee at each school whether she is testing there or not.

How will my daughter register for the test?
When your daughter completes her application with Holy Names she will be ask to list the name of the school where she will be testing. Holy Names will host the test on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. If she chooses Holy Names as her test site she will receive a reminder notice about five days before the test.

Can my daughter apply to more than one Catholic school?
Yes, your daughter may apply to up to three Catholic high schools. She will need to take the test only once. On the day of the test she will be instructed to list the schools where she would like the test scores to be sent.

What is included in the test?
The High School Placement Test is divided into five sections. They include:

  • Verbal cognitive skills, such as analogies, logic, synonyms and antonyms;
  • Quantitative cognitive skills, such as numeric comparisons and manipulation;
  • Reading, such as vocabulary and reading comprehension;
  • Mathematics, such as numeration, percents and decimals, problem solving, computations and applications; and
  • Language, such as punctuation, capitalization, spelling and composition.

How important are the test results to the admission decision?
The test results are important in our evaluation process and should be taken seriously, however they are not the only factor that we consider. At Holy Names we take the holistic approach when evaluating your daughter. We consider five sources when evaluating for admissions. They are; the complete application, 7th and 8th grade academic transcripts and standardized testing results for those two years, the principal’s and teacher’s confidential recommendations, your daughter’s interview, completed essay questions, and HSPT test results.

Will we receive copies of the test scores?
We will send you a copy of your daughter’s test results if she took the test at Holy Names High School.

Do you offer extended time on the Placement Exam for students with learning differences?
Holy Names will grant extended time to all applicants who have provided the proper documentation.  The documentation must be a current (dated within three years) assessment stating diagnosis, treatment, progress, and potential for success in a college preparatory curriculum.
